There are many free or low-cost courses available in Louisville, KY for anyone wanting to start up a small business. From accounting to business plans to marketing, there are experts out there ready and willing to help guide you to improve any aspect of your business.
The Jewish Family and Career Services in Louisville, KY offers an extensive course for immigrant and low-income micro-entrepreneurs. I’ve helped lead the marketing portions of this course three times now. Last week we began by covering marketing research. This is a two-part session. The first half is about learning the right questions to ask. The second part will be a trip to the library to learn about how to find the answers to your questions.
Important questions to ask about your business’ marketing include:
- What are your industry’s current conditions? Are they growing, shrinking? Are there new innovations or regulations that are creating change? If so, in what way?
- Who are your target market? What do they do, how much do they make? Where do they get their information about your type of services? Where do they spend their time? Where in the city do they live?
- Who is your competition? What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? How much are they charging? What special things are they offering? Where do you stand out against them? Who are their target market?
I very often harp on the Louisville Free Public Library, but I will say again that if you don’t know the answers to these questions you should definitely go there to get some training on researching the answers!
I will be back at the JFCS on Tuesday, June 18 to discuss how to properly price your products or services, and how to effectively promote a company when you’re just starting out and have very little money. This is a free course. If you would like to attend please contact me at (502) 718-3438 or firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll be happy to give you additional class details.
