Netiquette: USING ALL CAPS

I HAVE AN UNCLE WHO CAN JUST BARELY USE FACEBOOK AND EVERYTHING HE TYPES TO ANYONE IS IN ALL CAPS.  I’M STILL NOT ENTIRELY SURE WHY HE THINKS THIS IS ‘THE WAY’ TO DO THINGS OR WHY HE TYPES IN ALL CAPS RATHER THAN NO CAPS AT ALL, BUT THERE YOU GO.

WHO HASN’T GOTTEN JUNK EMAIL WITH ALL-CAP TITLES?

AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT FINDS ALL-CAPS TO BE EXCEPTIONALLY AGGRESSIVE? IT IS COMMONLY USED FOR WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO EMPHASIZE (YELL) SOMETHING.

SO WHEN MY LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SENT OUT THEIR 5TH EMAIL IN AS MANY WEEKS WITH THE TITLE “2 HOURS AND 59 MINUTES REMAINING TO PURCHASE RAFFLE TICKETS!” I COULDN’T HELP CRINGING.

REALLY? MY HIGH SCHOOL TRIED TO TEACH MANNERS AND HERE THEY ARE SENDING A TERRIBLY RUDE ‘BUY BUY BUY BUY BUY!’ SHOUT-FEST EMAIL?

WHEN YOU ARE ADVERTISING, PLEASE TRY TO KEEP IN MIND THAT ALL-CAPS IS A LOW-HANGING SEDUCTIVE FRUIT BECAUSE WE –DO- READ IT FIRST.  HOWEVER, PLEASE REMEMBER IT ISN’T GOING TO OFTEN BE RECEIVED WELL.  TRY TO STICK TO COMPELLING TITLES RATHER THAN CHEAP GIMMICKS THAT MIGHT RUB YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS THE WRONG WAY.

THAT IS, UNLESS YOU WANT THEM TO HIT “UNSUBSCRIBE”.
