Two weeks ago I was excited about our family’s annual Chili Cookoff not because it was coming up, but because I was getting to do some hand drawn illustrations for the invitation. I lamented to myself that I hadn’t gotten to do much illustrating in my current job and missed the challenge. Funnily enough, last week I was asked to draw no less than 24 illustrations for a job – in under a week.
I was going strong at 15 but started to lose steam by 20. It really brought to mind the fact that I was illustration-ally flabby. (Is that a word?) The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People labels the final habit as “Sharpening the Saw”. No matter your job (designing, marketing, running a business, sales, carpentry, etc) you need to keep your skills honed.
Those illustrations did get finished, and it was very fulfilling to feel well and truly stretched out of my comfort zone of work.
My question for you is: Have you stretched yourself recently? What did you learn from it? And if you haven’t – push yourself in something. It will undoubtedly help you grow and therefore help your business.
