Josh’s life story includes the powerful message of overcoming more than the obvious obstacles of life.
I learned about Josh Sundquist through his Amputee Rap video on YouTube. When he started animating excerpts from his book I realized I really wanted to learn about this amazing young man turned motivational speaker.
While I sometimes think of this book as almost recreational reading rather than self-help, it has so many strong reminders of what real life that I lean towards self-help. Real life, Josh reminds us, is messy. It’s not as simple as saying “I will overcome” even if at first it looks like you did succeed. There will still be other things, imperfect, human things that trip us up and can cause us to lose sight of our dreams and goals.
Josh’s struggle may have started with cancer, may still strongly include his and his mother’s battle with it, but it’s also a struggle against everyday life, social expectations and the fight to find your true calling. His victory over disillusionment and subsequent resolution in life makes this book a great read.
On top of it all, Josh brings humor, passion and love into the fabric of life in a way that reminds us all that there is good in the world, even when we forget about it.
