Review: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell

Down and Dirty: 4 out of 5

The one thing you should get out of this book is: there is more than one thing you should get out of this book.

John Maxwell is a renowned speaker on leadership, so it’s a surprise this is the first title of his I’ve picked up.  Hey, give me a break; I’ve got a lot of reading to do! I haven’t touched a Zig Ziglar book either yet!

I liked this book for its attempt to coil down a lot of information into as few ultra-important points as possible. Some of it I’d heard before. Some of it, like the fact leaders will only follow leaders who are better leaders than them, sort of explains some issues in my current situation.

What I can most remember about this book is the story of the man who wanted John to tell him the one thing he should know about leadership.  John recounts matching the man’s energy and pointing a finger to say “The one thing you should know about leadership is… there is MORE than one thing you should know about leadership.”

A definite read and re-read. My biggest qualm is that the book didn’t give a lot of actionable steps that seemed easily attainable as far as how to improve one’s leadership. I suppose there isn’t an easy way, but dang it – there should be!

Sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice… if you want to be a good leader, sacrifice some time and read this book!
